At least 30 people were killed and 70 others injured in four explosions in Syria's northwestern city of Idlib on Sunday.

According to an Anadolu Agency correspondent in the region, four car bomb blasts occurred in an area in the city center where vehicles were parked.

Photos and video from the activist-run Thiqa News Agency and Baladi News Agency show heavy damage along what appears to be a major avenue in the city, with several buildings damaged and vehicles overturned.

Ambulances and rescue teams rushed to the explosion site and efforts are under way to pull out the bodies and rescue the injured trapped under the rubble of the targeted building and neighboring houses, The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The monitor said the explosions targeted the headquarters of an opposition faction in Idlib.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the bombings.

The city and the province are controlled by several rebel factions and insurgents vying for dominance, the most powerful being an al-Qaida-linked group, Tahrir al-Sham.

The Syrian army and its allies launched an offensive in October to recapture the provinces of Idlib and Hama, and it has since been making swift advances.

The Syrian army lost Idlib to insurgents when the provincial capital fell in 2015. It became the only province fully under opposition control.

Iranian protests across several cities intensified on Satuday as new videos posted on social media showed demonstrators in the cities of Tehran and Kashan tore down posters depicting the country's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Demonstrators expressed their rejection of corruption and repression, calling for “dictator” Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to stand down as protests across several of Iran's provinces continued for a third consecutive day.

Economic protests first erupted on Thursday, sparked by social media posts and a surge in prices of basic food supplies, like eggs and poultry.

Iran's army chief declared on Thursday that police had quelled anti-government unrest that has killed 21 people but that his troops were ready to intervene if needed, as authorities staged more pro-government rallies.

The protests, which seem spontaneous and without a unifying leader, erupted a week ago in Iran's second city of Mashhad over economic hardships - mostly high youth unemployment, high living costs and alleged corruption.

"Although this blind sedition was so small that a portion of the police force was able to nip it in the bud ... you can rest assured that your comrades in the Islamic Republic's army would be ready to confront the dupes of the Great Satan (United States)," Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi was quoted in official media as saying.

Iran's vastness as well as restrictions on independent media make it hard to determine the breadth and depth of the unrest.

The semi-official labor news agency ILNA said the government on Thursday lifted restrictions on Instagram, one of the social media tools used to mobilize protesters. But access to a more widely used messaging app, Telegram, remained blocked, suggesting authorities remained uneasy about protest threats.

Those are very, very important questions we're trying to ask and answer,” said Chief Superintendent Christy Mangan.

The dead man is a 24-year-old Japanese man who was living in Dundalk. He died almost immediately from stab wounds to the back on Avenue Road shortly after 9am. Gardaí are currently attempting to notify his family.

Iranians protesting the country's strained economy gathered in Tehran and another major city on Friday, for the second day of spontaneous, unsanctioned demonstrations placing pressure on President Hassan Rouhani's government.

The semi-official Fars news agency reported that officials said around 300 protesters gathered in the western city of Kermanshah, the scene of a devastating earthquake in November that killed over 600 residents. In Tehran, fewer than 50 people protested at a public square.

Fars reported that protesters in Kermanshah chanted anti-government slogans such as "never mind Palestine, think about us," ''death or freedom" and "political prisoners should be freed." They damaged some public property before police dispersed them.

Police also arrested a small number of demonstrators in Tehran protesting price hikes and the president's economic policy.

The security deputy of Tehran's governor, Mohsen Hamedani, said that fewer than 50 people gathered at a public square in Tehran, and that most of them left after a police warning but a few decided to stay on.

"A few of them were temporarily arrested," Hamedani said, without elaborating on the exact figure. He added that if people want to show their anger by amassing in large numbers they should seek permission from the authorities first.

3 rockets fired from the Gaza Strip at Israel earlier today appeared to have been launched to deliberately coincide with a ceremony marking what would have been the birthday of IDF soldier Oron Shaul who was killed in July 2014, and whose remains are held by Hamas. A military official could not yet say that this was definitively the case, but said it absolutely could be, noting the uncommon timing of the attack. In general, militant groups fire their rockets from Gaza under the cover of darkness, rather than in broad daylight, as in Friday’s launches. The rockets were fired at the Sha’ar Hanegev and Sdot Hanegev regions of southern Israel on Friday noon. Two of them were intercepted by the Iron Dome system, while the 3rd struck near a building in a community in the area, causing damage. The launches were also directed toward the area where the ceremony was being held, overlooking the place where Staff Sergeant Oron Shaul was killed in the 2014 Gaza war.

Police in Iran’s capital said Thursday they will no longer arrest women for failing to observe the Islamic dress code in place since the 1979 revolution.

The announcement signaled an easing of punishments for violating the country’s conservative dress code, as called for by the young and reform-minded Iranians who helped re-elect President Hassan Rouhani, a relative moderate, earlier this year.

But hard-liners opposed to easing such rules still dominate Iran’s security forces and judiciary, so it was unclear whether the change would be fully implemented.

“Those who do not observe the Islamic dress code will no longer be taken to detention centers, nor will judicial cases be filed against them.” Tehran police chief Gen. Hossein Rahimi was quoted as saying by the reformist daily Sharq.

The semi-official Tasnim news agency said violators will instead be made to attend classes given by police. It said repeat offenders could still be subject to legal action, and the dress code remains in place outside the capital.
