Great white sharks are the stuff of legend - found to be the cause of many deadly attacks on swimmers and a staple of the ever-popular Shark Week.
But when one man spotted a juvenile great white just a few feet from his kayak in New Brighton Beach, California, he was more curious than panicked.
Rodrigo said he saw the shark on May 22 as he was preparing to launch his kayak and proceeded to get into the water anyway.
'Amazingly, he stayed with me for several minutes,' he said.
The animal followed the kayak, which also had a fish dangling on a fishing rod from the back, for a short time.
In the video, its long grey shadow can be seen circling as its fin moves through the water.
Luckily, Rodrigo eventually left the water unscathed.
