Dramatic footage which has emerged showed the staff dragging the man by his feet as he screamed on Tuesday.
Lucy Callaghan caught the incident in the Sainsbury’s Streatham Common store in London on camera - and has since spoken out about what happened saying: "You wouldn't treat an animal like this!"
She was shopping at the branch when she claims she saw staff members forcing the man to the floor and twisting his arm behind his back.
They then allegedly dragged him 100 meters across the floor by his feet to the staff area entrance.
The 40-year-old said she couldn’t believe how violent staff members were being with the man and described the incident as “surreal”.
A shocked Lucy can be heard in the video saying to staff: “This is abuse, what are you pulling him for?”
In the clip the unidentified man can be seen lying on the floor with a look of shock on his face - as staff members surround him and shout at customers trying to intervene.
It is not known what exactly he was alleged to have stolen, however Lucy said that the female staff member can be seen in the clip holding a bag that she had taken from the man.
As they drag him into the back of the store, the man can be heard shouting in pain while a staff member tells Lucy that it is “none of your business” where they are taking the man.
The 30 second clip has already had over 1,300 views since it was uploaded to Facebook.
The footage begins with four members of staff crowded around a man wearing blue jeans and a black jacket lying on the floor.
When Lucy asks “Is this what you get for shoplifting, really?” a male staff member, wearing a Sainsbury’s fleece and holding the alleged shop lifter by the foot shouts at her.
He points and shouts: “You said you were going to stop me, you want to stop me?”
The female staff member puts a hand on the man’s chest and tries to calm him as Lucy asks: “Where are you taking him then? Off the stop floor so you can beat him? Is that where you’re going? So where are you taking him then?”
As Lucy continues to ask the staff where they are taking him, they ignore her and drag the man through the back of the store.
The female staff member then responds that is it “none of your business” and the man can be heard screaming in the background as the doors swing closed.
Lucy took to social media to vent her frustration at the man’s treatment.
