CNN’s Brooke Baldwin was a bit thrown on Monday after hearing Florida congresswoman Debbie Wassermann Schultz explain why the government shutdown was politically worth it for Democrats. The former DNC chairwoman spoke to Baldwin following the key vote this afternoon the Senate took to end the shutdown. The news is getting a welcome reception among the GOP, though Democrat leaders are being accused of folding under pressure and abandoning what they were fighting for. When Baldwin asked what did Democrats get for their efforts, Wassermann Schultz answered with “the potential for momentum” on a DACA solution. She tried to explain how this will matter down the line, but Baldwin was taken aback by her answer.
“I am so hung up…I know Americans are listening, and they heard you say ‘potential for momentum,'” Baldwin said. “And they’re thinking, ‘Potential for momentum. Was that really worth shutting the government down for?’ The potential for something?” Wassermann Schultz’s response: “Republicans should be asking themselves that question because they shut that down. This is the Trump shutdown, Brooke. They control the White House, the House, and the Senate. They have the full ability to pass the budget, done whatever they wanted, and they couldn’t because they know that the way they’re trying to approach funding the government is irresponsible, and they could not get all of their own members to vote for it.” -- As the congresswoman continue to defend her “potential for momentum” answer, Baldwin pressed her further by asking whether she would would trust Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell with regard to his deal with Senate Democrats.
