A woman has been badly injured in the UK Wife Carrying competition after her partner slipped and dropped her head-first on to the ground.
The female participant was treated by medics and stretchered away on a spinal board after plunging on to the grass in front of shocked spectators.
Dramatic footage showed her writhing around, apparently in a lot of pain, before being carried away on the board, with her neck in a brace.
The woman's partner had been carrying her over his shoulders, with her feet crossed in front of his face, when he slipped in muddy conditions.
It is believed the incident happened in the course's 'splash zone' - where spectators are encouraged to bring water pistols and buckets of water.
