The mothers of black Americans killed by police officers will feature prominently at the Democratic National Convention on the same night President Bill Clinton will address the delegates, the DNC committee announced Friday.
Among the names of speakers were Gwen Carr, the mother of Eric Garner; Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin; and Lezley McSpadden, the mother of Michael Brown, which Democrats have dubbed, “Mothers of Movement†for their activism after the death of their sons.
The group of mothers will highlight Hillary Clinton’s theme of “a lifetime of fighting for children and families,†one of four themes the convention will strive to project when it gavels in later this month.
On the convention’s first night, first lady Michelle Obama will be featured prominently, along with Clinton’s primary rival, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who endorsed Clinton earlier this week.
On Wednesday, President Obama and Vice President Biden will highlight the theme of “working together,†pointing to her service as secretary of State under the Obama administration, even after their own combative primary campaign in 2008.
Clinton will address delegates on the final night of the convention after her daughter, Chelsea Clinton. The DNCC said, “Hillary will speak about her vision for our country – her belief that we are stronger together and that America is at its best when we work together to solve our problems.â€
