Eight officers from the Park County Sheriff’s Office went to the snow-covered two-story home in a hillside neighborhood north of the town of Bailey to serve what authorities described as a “high-risk” eviction notice. The well-maintained houses sit on big lots, with room for horses to graze in an area popular with hunters and anglers.
Martin Wirth appeared on the deck of his home when the officers arrived, then went back inside, according to the Park County sheriff’s office account of the shooting.
Officers followed him in, and Wirth fired on them, prompting them to return fire, sheriff’s officials said.
The shooting killed Corporal Nate Carrigan, a 13-year veteran of the sheriff’s office. One of the wounded officers underwent surgery for life-threatening injuries and was in critical condition.
As a leader in the Occupy Denver movement, Wirth spoke out against corporate welfare, big banks, the cost of higher education, and in favor of sustaining and expanding public transportation in his run for Senate. He also claimed to be a gun rights advocate who supported the Constitution.
His Facebook page also showed Wirth was against fracking, was not a fan of Scalia and was disappointed Justice Clearance Thomas was still in good health after te announcement of Scalia’s death. His page is also filled with anti-police posts. He also shows support for universal health care.
