LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- Rush hour drivers witnessed a horrific scene Wednesday afternoon after police say a man set himself on fire. It happened at one of Lexington’s busiest intersections; Richmond Road and Fontaine Drive.
A witness captured the moment bystanders and Lexington Firefighter, Major Joe Madden began helping the man.
According to Lexington Police, the man poured gasoline on himself and set himself on fire after getting into an argument with his significant other. That man was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries, according to authorities. His name has not been released.
The Fire Department says Major Madden was off-duty and waiting at the traffic light, when he saw the man catch on fire. ABC 36 was told that while Madden assisted the fire victim, the firefighter suffered burns to his hands and face.
Major Madden went to the hospital to be treated for his injuries. The Lexington Fire Department says they hope to have Major Madden back at work Thursday.
