While presidential candidates Ted Cruz and Donald Trump advocate for "bombing the (expletive) out of ISIL," Bono is recommending a different approach.
“Don’t laugh," he instructed U.S. senators during a visit to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday. "I think comedy should be deployed. It’s like, you speak violence, you speak their language. But you laugh at them, when they’re goose-stepping down the street, and it takes away their power. So, I’m suggesting that the Senate send in Amy Schumer, and Chris Rock, and Sacha Baron Cohen, thank you.”
But the U2 frontman, a longtime champion of foreign aid and the founder of the One Campaign, also had more concrete advice — and dire warnings — for lawmakers during his testimony at the Dirksen Senate Building. He urged them to take swift action in dealing with the Syrian refugee crisis and the violent Islamic State extremism that spawned it.
“When aid is structured properly, with a focus on fighting poverty and improving governance, it could just be the best bulwark we have against the extremism of our age,” he advised.
