An assistant principal at Kingstree Senior High School in South Carolina is under investigation after police say he was caught on camera choking a student Monday.
According to WMBF, the student and her mother met with police Tuesday. The student’s mother told police that her daughter was in a fight with another student when Coach Mack Burgess allegedly put the student in a tight chokehold, causing her to lose consciousness.
The school’s online directory lists Burgess as the school’s assistant principal.
Officers said the video of the incident gave them enough probable cause to obtain an arrest warrant for Burgess. A judge, however, advised the officer to issue a courtesy summons instead. So far, no one has been arrested.
The teen’s mother, Yolanda Nesmith, said the video of the incident was extremely disturbing to see.
“Our kids may do wrong at times, but in a situation like this, I’m asking for all parents if your kids get in a situation, stand up for them,” she told WMBF. “I want to seek justice. I want to see him arrested for this because this is my daughter and something could have happened worse than this.”
