Cockpit footage from Libyan Air Force Dassault Mirage F1 attack aircraft shows airstrikes on Islamic State positions in and around the port city of Sirte, Gaddafi’s hometown. Recent operations by Libyan forces fighting for the UN-brokered government have made big gains in their fight against the Islamic State around Sirte, which has become the terror group’s most substantial area of control outside of Iraq and Syria. The pro government fighters claim to have the city completely surrounded, but have taken heavy losses. Libya has used the Dassault Mirage F1 since buying them from France in the late 1970’s. In 2012, two Libyan Mirage F1 pilots landed in Malta seeking asylum as they refused Gaddafi’s orders to bomb protesters. The new Libyan government has worked out an agreement with France to modernize their current fleet of the aircraft and possibly purchase more of the model from France’s retired fleet.
