GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A university athlete is being called a hero for stopping an alleged rape behind a bar near the University of Florida campus. Christian Garcia spends his days preparing for the football field with the Florida Gators. At night, he works security at a bar near campus. Around 2 a.m. on Thursday, police say Garcia was taking out the trash when he heard noises coming from behind a dumpster. According to CBS Miami, he thought a couple was having sex until he realized the woman was unconscious. “I mean, at that point, I’m like, this isn’t right. This girl is probably drunk, there’s no possible way she could’ve given consent,” he said. At that point, investigators say Garcia got involved. “I grabbed the guy by the shoulder and said, ‘Get off of her. This isn’t right.’ And the guy yelled at me like, ‘Mind your own business,” he said. Garcia says the suspect, who was identified at 34-year-old Christopher Shaw, attempted to fight him but was being held back by friends who were standing nearby during the alleged attack. Police say the attack was caught on camera and they believe Shaw may have raped other women. The 19-year-old victim told investigators she told Shaw to stop and attempted to push him away, but was overpowered because she was too intoxicated. Shaw was arrested for sexual battery.
