Running battles between the police and anti-Trump protesters continued in Portland on Friday, where an estimated 4,000 took to the streets to demonstrate their discontent with the recent US election results. At least 26 protesters have been arrested over the course of the night, with police using pepper spray, teargas and rubber bullets in an attempt to disperse the crowd.
What began as a peaceful march soon escalated when dozens of demonstrators smashed windows in the Pearl district of the city. The event has been declared a "riot" according to a tweet by the Portland Police Department.
Trump declared victory in the early hours of Wednesday morning, after his Democrat rival Hillary Clinton called him to concede defeat following a bitterly fought election battle. Trump beat Clinton in a surprise landslide victory, garnering 278 of the Electoral College votes, while the Democratic candidate received only 218 in a race she was expected to win.
