Tim Farron took over leadership of the Liberal Democrats from Nick Clegg in July last year was speaking from a holding centre for refugee children aged between 12 and 17, where he urged Britain to take in more child migrants from France.
In the two-minute video message Mr Farron said: “Many of them want to come to the UK. It’s interesting to hear why. Fleeing from appalling circumstances; from war, from oppression, from torture. From terrible, terrible things.
“Why do they want to come to the UK? Because of Britain’s reputation as a place of peace and security and tranquility. Somewhere where you can start afresh having witnessed appalling things at far too young an age.”
