Violent clashes broke out between police and protesters demonstrating against newly installed toll booths which cost 5 soles (€1.40) to pass, in northern Lima on Thursday.
Police officers fired tear gas to disperse the crowds, who threw rocks at police and set the toll booths on fire. The march, which started on the North Pan-American highway, caused heavy traffic jams on the roads.
Local media said that an unknown number of arrests were made during the protest.
