New Zealand’s Laurel Hubbard, 39, formerly known as Gavin Hubbard, won the women’s 90+kg division at the 2017 Australasian Weightlifting Championships in Melbourne.
She made history as the first transgender athlete to represent New Zealand in Melbourne breaking 4 national records in the process. Hubbard met all the International Olympic Committee and International Weightlifting Federation criteria to compete as a woman.
Michael Keelan, the head of the Australian Weightlifting Federation, was impressed by Hubbard’s composure and said “she’s on the cusp of creating a lot of history.”
