A lot of Americans, and certainly a lot of parents who have children in the Montgomery County Public Schools, are demanding answers after two Rockville High School freshmen, ages 17 and 18, were arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a 14-year-old girl in a school bathroom. One more detail, courtesy of County Executive Ike Leggett: “Although these individuals had no previous involvement in the County’s criminal justice system, these alleged rapists do have outstanding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) orders.” The alleged rape occurred last Thursday, and on Tuesday, the school district held a press conference on the “serious incident.” Dr. Jack Smith is holding a press conference in response to a serious incident at Rockville High School.
MCPS all those Masters and PhDs and you ALL thought allowing 18 year old men in class w/ 14 yr old girls was fine. Shame on MCPS. “We do not know what anyone’s immigration status is in the school system because the law says we don’t collect that and we don’t,” said Dr. Smith. “But of those 25,000 [students who speak another language as their first home language], some are here with different kinds of documentation and some have none. And it is wholly and entirely inappropriate for any of us, anytime, anywhere to say that we are going to deprive a 6-year-old, an 8-year-old, a 12-year-old, a 14-year-old, a 15- and 18-year-old of an education because a horrible incident happened last Thursday in one of our schools.” OK, don’t deprive a 14-year-old and an 18-year-old of an education … but people still would like to know what the two were doing in the same class. Well?
We learned at press conference if you're 18 & enrolling in Montgomery Co Public Schools there's no background check, criminal or immigration. How did they determine 9th grade? They said since they didn't have any high school credits, that automatically makes them freshmen. Can we assume there’s an upper age limit there, or no? Their answer sucks: No provable school credit, so they get placed in 9th grade, even if they’re 18-yo. That has to stop. -- MCPS Superintendent on rape of teen: Many people would like to change the conversation and make it more than this incident, but it is not. Come on, now … let’s take a breath and remember that the important thing here is not to appear anti-immigrant or xenophobic. "We shouldn't paint all students who speak another language, another religion, another skin color, with a broad brush."
