In a preview of an interview with Fox News Channel’s Sunday Morning Futures set to air this Sunday, Eric Trump strongly suggested that campaign chairman Paul Manafort was fired by his father Donald Trump, contradicting the official campaign line that Manafort had resigned.
“I think my father didn’t want to be distracted by whatever things Paul was dealing with,” Trump said, likely alluding to the flurry of news reports indicating that Manafort helped lay the groundwork for the Russian invasion of Crimea and also illegally funneled cash to pro-Putin lobbying efforts.
“You know, Paul was amazing. He helped us get through the primary process, he helped us get through the convention, he did a great job with the delegates,” Trump said. “Now you look at [new campaign manager Kellyanne Conway] and some of the other people we’re bringing in, and they’re absolutely fantastic. And I think they’re the ones that are going to bring us all the way through November 8th and ultimately get us the victory.”
“Again, my father just didn’t want to have the distraction looming over the campaign and, quite frankly, looming over all the issues that Hillary’s facing right now,” he concluded.
