Jeremy Joseph Christian is facing murder charges after police say he killed two people on a MAX train headed to the Hollywood Transit Center Friday afternoon.
Witness accounts detail the moments leading up to the stabbing as hateful and rage-filled, as Christian allegedly hurled insults at two young Muslim women sitting on the train.
When two men came to the defense of the young women, police say Christian slashed their throats - killing them.
A third stabbing victim is recovering in the hospital.
Christian is no stranger to the law and no stranger to racist rants, either.
Court records show Christian was convicted of robbery and kidnapping in 2002, and KATU News has obtained mugshots of his other arrests dating back to that time.
In the 2002 incident, an officer responding to a robbery call spotted Christian fleeing the scene. Police opened fire on him, striking Christian in the cheek. The wound was not life-threatening.
Most recently, 35-year-old Christian was seen at a protest in Portland's Montavilla neighborhood on April 29.
After the annual 82nd Avenue of the Roses Parade was canceled due to violent threats aimed at the Multnomah County Republican Party - which planned to participate in the parade - opposing groups gathered at Montavilla City Park for clashing protests and marches.
