While it may seem like you are doing the right thing, the internet is always the first to call you wrong on your shit. They were not happy with this guy for letting a drunk driver “go” without getting the cops involved.
The guy posted: I pulled over a drunk driver and gave him a second chance. I didn’t know if that was the right thing to do. I just went back to the vehical and his friends/ family was there. The woman who owned the vehicle cried in my arms thanking me. I guess it was, but any one who thinks about drinking and driving just remember your not alone on your ride.
The internet was not pleased:
1. Uhhhh. Nah man don’t do this again. Drunk drivers need to go to jail so there is a record of this happening and if this happens again, the criminal judiciary can step in. Doing this makes his actions “fly under the radar”. Be a good samaritan if this happens again and call the police. You sure did HIM a favor, but society will pay the price.
2. without informing the police, you are actually letting him get behind the wheel without ever learning a lesson.
what is stopping him from doing this again tomorrow when he has his keys? nothing.
you are actually doing more harm than good. great work!
3. Although well-intentioned, please call the police next time. The average drunk driver will drive 80 times under the influence before their first arrest. This incident likely wasn’t this guy’s first rodeo driving drunk, nor will it be his last. Without having to suffer the actual consequences of a DUI arrest, this man is further emboldened to continue this dangerous pattern which only puts public safety at a greater risk.
These comments go on and on and on.
The guy did respond to the hate with the comment:
Yeah there’s a lot to both sides. My ego isn’t one of them. I did what I did. I know I stopped something that could have gone bad. Everyone is saying I shouldn’t have taken action. He passed a lot of people and i didn’t see anyone do anything. So if I did just call the police and went home he could have also easly got away and did this another day. So let’s stop ragging on me for taking action and getting this drunk driver off the road today. Its all an argument about what ifs when no one knows for sure what will come of this.
And if I could do this again I would. But next time I won’t be so easy.
