It was the Labor Day public holiday on St Quentin's Avenue in Claremont.
Sam and a friend were walking home from getting a late night meal when two men approached, then an attack came out of nowhere.
"I just see a fist, and hear a horrible sound," Sam's friend said of the horrific incident.
"Both from the punch and when he hit the ground. It was horrible, it just got stuck in my head, it was like a watermelon crushing."
Sam was unconscious for several minutes while his friends tried desperately to wake him.
"I could have died," Sam said.
" I'm very lucky I got away with the minor injuries that I have."
Sam said he had never seen the two men before.
The last thing he remembers is a man spitting at his feet before he was knocked out.
Police are investigating claims the two men had been picking fights in the area before they set their sights on Sam, who suffered a concussion and bruising.
Two and a half weeks after the attack, he still has severe headaches.
The two men haven't been caught.
