The daytime assault left the boy with serious stab wounds including a punctured lung.
CCTV showed the attacker walking down a busy high street in Newham, east London, before turning, seemingly at random, and setting upon the boy.
He charged towards the victim before swinging his arms violently as he repeatedly stabbed him.
The boy was seen desperately trying to flee the attack but the unrelenting attacker chased him further down the street and out of view of the camera.
Metropolitan Police have now launched a manhunt for a suspect.

At around 4pm on May 8, the victim - a 17-year-old male - was walking in Green Street, E6 when he was attacked by a male suspect.
The victim was taken to an east London hospital suffering injuries including a punctured lung, where he received treatment prior to being discharged several days later.
The motive for the attack is unknown - nothing was stolen.
