A wanted man bit a police dog's ear and head as an officer desperately tried to pull him off of the animal.
Dramatic footage captured by a witness shows the suspect sinking his teeth into a German shepherd called Manpol Theo.
The shocking struggle unfolded in a street as the suspect refused to surrender following a chase.
Video shows the man repeatedly kicking Theo and biting the dog as a second man encourages him to "bite his ear off", the Manchester Evening News reports.
The incident occurred in June after the man abandoned his car and ran off on foot along Martin Street in Hyde, Greater Manchester.
In the video, Theo manages to bring him to a halt but the man kicks and clamps his teeth on the dog's ear and head.
Theo's handler, Greater Manchester Police PC Gareth Greaves, tries to pull the man off the dog before additional officers arrive and help detain the two men.
PC Greaves said the tussle lasted around seven minutes - and the clip doesn't show the man kicking both Theo and himself to the floor.
The officer was left with a busted lip and a broken hand following the incident.
Theo suffered a wound to his head after being bitten and found it too painful to lie down for a couple of days due to bruising.
