The Dangers of Marxism and Socialism
God or government: Who will we serve?

The evil of socialism, marxism, statism, is not it’s calculable material inefficiency, but it’s INCALCULABLE damage to the soul. Central economic planning has given way to a new type of socialism achieved through a different means.
How? Through the extensive redistribution of incomes through taxation and the introduction of the welfare state. The “effects†of this type of socialism are brought about more slowly, indirectly, imperfectly, but are very much the same as if there were a direct government takeover. It is not revolutionary socialism, but socialism where freedom is lost by an almost imperceptible increases in degrees of servitude to the state.
“The utopian schemes of leveling [redistribution of wealth], and a community of goods, are as visionary and impracticable as those that vest all property in the Crown. [These ideas] are arbitrary, despotic, and, in our government, unconstitutional.†-Sam Adams
The Bible regularly assumes and reinforces a system in which property belongs to individuals, not government.
Every human economic system bears the marks of sin. No system will ever be perfect until Christ returns. But, there are certain principles of economics and government that God has clearly and plainly laid out in his word that lead to life, and life more abundantly while we are here on earth.
Statism (marxism, communism, socialism) disregards the right of the individual to own personal property. Instead of recognizing individual rights, the government takes upon itself the right to own the means of production. Your food, your clothing, and your shelter and everything else you are allowed to use comes as a gift from the state. Since the state owns the means of production, even your labor becomes the property of the state.
The constitution and declaration of independence does not say that the government is to educate us, feed us, provide us medical care, give us money in retirement, protect us from poverty, etc… The Biblical role of government is not to give us things. Governments are instituted to protect our God-given natural rights. In fact, whenever government gives us things, government has to violate the rights of some one else.
Throughout the Bible, one of God’s blessings is “increased productivity†from the Earth, and one of His curses on people who sin is that their productivity will be “hindered.â€
Gen 3:17-19 “by the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground.â€
Deut 28:18 “Cursed shall be the fruit of your body, of your land, of the increase of your cattle and the young of your sheep.†(This is economic)
