An elderly victim of a brutal stabbing lay bleeding in the heart of Melbourne as people walked past him, before one bystander finally dialled Triple-0.
The man, aged in his 60s, left an 80-metre trail of blood and remains in hospital with serious injuries after he was assaulted on William Barak Bridge on Friday morning.
'(He) had been there for quite some time,' Detective Senior Constable Todd Greaney said on Wednesday.
'Several members of public walked past him and police want those people to come forward.
The man, who was assaulted between 4am and 7am before a passer-by called police, remains so badly injured that detectives haven't been able to speak with him.
