Steven Kilby suffers with severe depression and is on the autistic spectrum, but was shown mercy by a judge who acknowledged his condition.
Kilby armed himself with a broken bottle on April 7 and demanded the worker at Stuart's News in Hull emptied his till.
But rather than give in to Kilby’s demands, the brave employee courageously reached out across the counter to disarm him, the Hull Daily Mail reports.
Bungling Kilby, 30, waited in the newsagents for at least three minutes before making his move, then made his way towards the door before sprinting from the shop.
