Mobile phone footage shared on Twitter on the incident in Croydon yesterday afternoon shows a group of moped riders circling a woman who is walking along the path.

One of them jumps off his moped and appears to threaten the woman by waving a knife - who screams out.

A passer-by intervenes, repeatedly jumping between the attacker and the woman to try to stop him - at one point swinging their bag to ward off the knifeman.

They are joined by another who blocks the knifeman from getting near his target - but by now there are a number of moped thieves who outnumber them.

The relationship between the group is unclear and it is not known if the man was known to the woman.

The attackers eventually get what they want from the woman and flee the scene on the back of their mopeds.

The footage was taken from a window of a house on the street, and is shot from above.

It was alleged the attacker stole the woman's chain.

It was shared by the Norbury Labour Party , in south London, and is understood to have been taken around 3pm on Wednesday afternoon.
