With 90 percent of the island territory's cell towers out of service, people on the island are finding it impossible to communicate with loved ones on the mainland in the US, and rescue workers can't coordinate their relief efforts.



Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico more than a week ago and has left it without power and with little access to fuel and other supplies.


The State Department is requiring evacuees from storm-ravaged Puerto Rico to promise to pay back the cost of a full-fare one-way ticket. It's a disaster of unprecedented nature... Food stores, when they do open, have had bare shelves and drinking water has been hard to find. Some water-supply trucks have been mobbed. Already at least two lawmakers have visited Puerto Rico - Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D., N.Y.), who was born on the island but represents parts of Brooklyn, visited on Friday as part of an official delegation from NY state led by Democratic Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo.


Trump faced mounting calls to freeze the 97-year-old act, which requires products shipped between USA ports to be moved by American-owned ships.


She said President Trump should let emergency response workers on the island "cut through the red tape", and do more.


"We have no idea what is happening in a lot of parts of Puerto Rico", Rubio said.
