Police officer stabbed and four mowed down by van in ‘terror attack’ in Canada

A terror attack in Canada has left several injured after a cop was stabbed and a car deliberately rammed pedestrians driven by a suspect with an ISIS flag.

Police said that the attack began with a man driving his car "at high speed" at a police checkpoint outside an American football game in Edmonton, Alberta, attended by thousands of people.

He crashed through the barricade and hit a police officer sending him flying 15ft into the air.

The driver then jumped out and "viciously" attacked the injured officer, stabbing him several times, before running away.

EPS Chief Rod Knecht said: “The vehicle struck the officer, sending him flying into the air fifteen feet, before colliding with the officer’s cruiser, again at a high rate of speed."

Just two hours later, police investigating the earlier attack pulled over a truck.

The suspect, said to be 30 years old, fled when his name was recognised as the owner of the vehicle used in the initial attack, according to local media.

Police described how the truck deliberately tried to hit pedestrians on the pavement during the pursuit, leaving at least four injured.

At a press conference, police said they were treating the two incidents as "acts of terror" and said that while they believed the attacker "acted alone" they were not ruling out that others may have been involved.

Police have also confirmed an ISIS flag was seen in the suspect's vehicle - photos of which were taken by local media at the scene.

Knecht said: “Throughout the chase, the truck deliberately attempted to hit pedestrians in crosswalks and in alleys in two areas along Jasper Avenue.

“It is believed at this time that these two incidents are related, based on evidence at the scenes, and actions of the suspect, at 12:38 a.m. today, it was determined that these incidents are being investigated as acts of terrorism."

The driver was apprehended and is in custody.
