This is the moment police and firefighters "drive into hell" as they battle wildfires which have claimed the lives of 23 people.

ABC News reporters at the scene interviewed two brothers working through the remains of their elderly parents house.
Chuck and Mike Ripey explained that their 100-year-old father was found in a hallway trying to get to his paralysed wife of 75 years and said there is no way she would have got out of her home.
"He never made it to her room," Chuck said.
