Alien-like creature with wiggling hairy tentacles and a huge orange body captured in horrifying video footage

A terrifying 'alien-like' creature flexing its hairy tentacles has been captured in horrifying video footage.

The monster insect , filmed in Indonesia, is seen wiggling its huge orange body up and down, while it moves its four thick tentacles about.

Thousands of people reacted in horror after the footage was shared on Facebook by Gandis this week.

One person joked: "I'd burn the house down if I saw this" while another added: "Give him the keys and tell him the house is yours."

Another wrote: "What in the heckle and jeckle is that?"

The creature in question is actually a Creatonotos gangis moth, which is found in Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Japan, Thailand, New Guinea and Queensland.

Despite its eerie appearance the animal is not harmful to humans - but it is known for wreaking havoc on pomegranate trees, according to a report from lazerhorse.org

Its weird wriggling tentacles - actually called coremata - are used to attract mates, as they give off pheromone hydroxydanaidal through scent organs.

It produces its tentacles and pheremones by feasting on bitter tasting plants that are high in pyrrolizidine alkaloids.

The moths also have a wingspan of about 4cm.

Researchers revealed this week that three quarters of flying insects have been wiped out in less than 30 years in what scientists fear could be an “ecological Armageddon”.

Insects including bees and butterflies in 63 German nature reserves have decreased by 76% since 1989 and by more than 80% at the height of summer.

Researchers believe that insect populations are becoming trapped on nature reserves surrounded by farmland regularly doused with pesticides.
