"My fears is that when a Republican wins the White House Democrats will demand payback."
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) predicted in 1998, during the Clinton impeachment fight, that Democrats would use the articles of impeachment “as a routine tool to fight political battles” if a Republican were to occupy the White House.
Schumer’s prediction seems to have come to fruition following House Democrats’ appointment of Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) to serve as Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.
If Democrats are successful in retaking the House, in all likelihood they will attempt to bring forward articles of impeachment against President Trump. At least “58 House Democrats — or 30 percent of their caucus — have voted favorably on a motion to impeach Trump.”
Nadler, who would become chair of the House Judiciary Committee if Democrats retake the House in 2018, would be responsible for bringing forward the articles of impeachment against Trump.
