Philippe Reines, a longtime adviser to 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, told a gathering of interns on Wednesday that the only Democrat who could have beaten Donald Trump in 2016 is Barack Obama.
“I don’t think any Democrat would have beaten Donald Trump, aside from President Obama,” he said. “If you look at polling, I think one out every five voters came out and said they voted for Donald Trump, they had voted for Barack Obama in 2012, and they continued to approve of the job Barack Obama was doing last year.”
Reines added that he believed Vice President Joe Biden would have been unable to capitalize on Obama’s popularity, but he would have been saddled with Obama’s problems.
“He would have been bogged down by Obamacare. He would have been bogged down by trade. He would have been bogged down by being in Washington for decades,” the Clinton adviser said of Biden.
