A Tory minister shocked the House of Lords today by dramatically resigned from Theresa May’s top team in the middle of a debate, apparently because he turned up late for the debate.
International Development minister Lord Bates was absent for the beginning of a debate on income inequality, forcing Lords Chief Whip Lord Taylor to step in to answer the opening question from Baroness Lister.
He arrived a few minutes later, but too late to answer the question himself.
Later in the session, he apologised for his tardiness, saying he was “ashamed” to have been absent.
