Admiral Kurt Tidd, the chief of the U.S. Southern Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday that the Cuban military has established a “significant presence” in Venezuela in support of the Maduro regime.
Responding to questions from Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI), Tidd said that the U.S. military is observing the Cuban military presence.
Peters remarked that some analysts “believe that there are hundreds to perhaps thousands of Cuban troops in Venezuela.”
Tidd confirmed that reporting.
“When I talk with my counterparts in the region, they have been quick to share that we see a significant presence of Cuban advisers to the security forces that continue to prop up the Maduro regime,” he said.
The admiral added that the communist government’s intervention in the quickly collapsing South American country is “a matter of concern.”
