National Rifle Association (NRA) chairman Wayne LaPierre said that Democrats like Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) don’t want gun control reform, but rather to eradicate individual freedoms. He made the remarks during his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Thursday.
LaPierre’s speech at CPAC marked the first public comments he’s made since the deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
“Opportunists wasted not one second to exploit tragedy for political gain. The break-back speed of calls for more gun control laws, and the breathless national media eager to smear the NRA,” LaPierre said describing the hours after the shooting.
“Think about that: in the midst of genuine grief and a very understandable passion, as millions of Americans searched for meaningful solutions, what do we find?” LaPierre asked. “Chris Murphy, Nancy Pelosi, and more, cheered on by the national media, eager to blame the NRA and call for even more government control.”
“They hate the NRA. They hate the Second Amendment. They hate individual freedom. In the rush of calls for more government, they’ve also revealed their true selves. The elites don’t care, not one wit, about America’s school system and schoolchildren,” LaPierre continued. “If they truly cared, what they would do is they would protect them. For them, it’s not a safety issue. It’s a political issue.”
“Their goal is to eliminate the Second Amendment and our firearms freedoms, so they can eradicate all individual freedoms. What they want are more restrictions on the law-abiding. Think about that: their solution is to make you, all of you, less free,” LaPierre added.
