Arizona State Rep. Isela Blanc (D.) was arrested Monday in Washington, D.C., during a protest supporting illegal immigrants protected by Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).
Blanc was one of three protesters who were arrested during the protest, which took place on the National Mall while the state legislature in Phonix was in session. Blanc said she identifies with the so-called Dreamers who are seeking legal status.
"I’ve been undocumented, I know the fear and anxiety the Dreamers feel," Blanc said. "I’m also an Elected official, so I know what it means to reach the American Dream, which is all they want. I have a moral obligation to fight for them."
Immigration activist organization Living United for Change in Arizona (LUCHA) said that two other protesters were arrested with Blanc and that the three were released later in the day. Blanc's statement was posted on LUCHA's Facebook page along with video of the protest.
