A woman who filmed herself killing a cat in her washing machine and uploaded the footage to social media in a horrific act of cruelty could face jail.
The video, taken by an unnamed Spanish woman from Jaen, in Andalusia, was shared on Instagram.
According to local media, the cruel 23-year-old waitress even made the animal endure a second cycle after it survived the first wash.
In the clip the helpless cat can be heard meowing from inside the washing machine.
The woman taunts the creature, saying: "What is the matter? Meow? You stay there!"
She even uses a laughing emoji to suggest that the material is somehow amusing.
It is believed she killed the cat after it had tried to get her female pet cat pregnant.
A caption she had posted under the footage - titled Gatolavadora which in English would translate as ‘Cat Washing Machine’ - said: "This is what happens to tomcats that have it away with my poor little female cat."
After what appears to be a first spin, she approaches the washing machine again and says: “Ladies and gentleman we’ve come to see how it’s going so we can hang it up but it appears to be still meowing.
“Those who say cats have nine lives appear to be right. Son of a b****.”
She films herself adding more soap for a second wash, and says: “It looks as if we haven’t done it right.”
Then she holds her phone up to the glass after the second cycle has completed - videoing the animal in obvious pain and on the verge of death.
At the end of the wash she zooms in on the cat, which no longer appears alive inside the machine.
The woman says: "The cat with bad luck is dead."
After the video was published on social media, outraged viewers collected 300,000 signatures on change.org demanding proper punishment for the "psychopath that killed a cat".
According to local reports, the woman remained defiant in the face of stiff criticism on social media and allegedly threatened to continue killing defenceless animals.
Alongside a photo of a dog, she wrote: "The next victim. You do not want me to kill cats, so I will kill dogs ."
The political party Animalist Party Against Mistreatment of Animals (PACMA) has also jumped in and organised a demonstration in front of Spain's Congress of Deputies to take place tomorrow.
The protest hopes to address the "political inactivity" regarding animal abuse and demand new laws that will protect all animals.
Police confirmed they were involved in an ongoing criminal probe, although they said the investigation was being led by a court and they could not comment further.
The woman's brother has gone on social media to confirm he is aware of the furore but insisted: “I don’t want to talk because I haven’t spoken to her for months.”
Spanish political party PACMA has confirmed it will demand an “exemplary” prison sentence for the woman if convicted, although under Spanish law the maximum jail sentence she could receive would be one and a half years and first time offenders in Spain usually get suspended sentences.
