One hand in his pocket, Stephen Paddock seems like any other guest as he chats amiably with a bellhop at the Mandalay Bay Hotel.
The other hand is on a suitcase, and at least five more are on a trolley about to be taken up to his room.
What the hotel worker did not know at the time, is that Paddock's luggage was filled with guns and ammunition and the VIP guest was about to commit mass murder.
It is almost six months since Paddock, a successful high stakes gambler, opened fire on crowds at a nearby country music concert in Las Vegas, killing 58 people and injuring more than 800 before turning a gun on himself.
And no one is much the wiser as to what drove Paddock, a 64-year-old with no criminal history, to carry out the slaughter.
Now the Mandalay Bay has released security camera footage of Paddock in the seven days before the shooting to the New York Times.
The 6ft 4in figure is indistinguishable from other guests as he plays video poker machines, buys snacks and uses the elevators.
