Huge plumes of black smoke were seen near Manchester city centre after 'plastic pallets' caught fire.
The blaze broke out on wasteland near the Ancoats area of the city and it could be seen for miles around.
Fire crews were sent to the scene shortly after 1pm and quickly brought the flames under control.
The fire involved a large quantity of plastic pallets and other rubbish, said a spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire.
Fire engines based at Manchester Central, Philips Park and Salford stations attended the scene off Rochdale Road after a number of 999 calls were received.
