Manchester City's team bus was pelted with bottles and flares as it made its way to Anfield.
City face Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-final first leg on Wednesday night in an all-English showdown.
Both team coaches took a different route to the stadium amid safety concerns.
Liverpool fans had planned to gather along Anfield Road to greet the two teams but Liverpool re-routed the team buses along Arkles Lane.
That didn't stop Reds fans greeting City's team bus in an unsavoury manner as it arrived shortly after 6:30pm.
Bottles, cans and flares were thrown by the waiting Liverpool supporters as the visitors pulled into Anfield.
