A worshipper suffered horrific burns after falling onto burning coals at a religious festival long slammed by activists calling for a ban on the 'superstitious' practice.
The festival, held at the Sri Revanasiddeshwara temple in Ramanagara district of Karnataka, is just one of many organised across India as part of a centuries-old tradition.
Designed to show dedication to God, worshippers are often asked to walk or run barefoot over burning coal embers.
Previous unconfirmed reports about the festivals have even documented worshippers being beheaded as part of a witchcraft sacrifice.
