The gunman who shot dead two police officers and a bystander in the Belgian city of Liege had "committed murder the night before", the country's interior minister said.
The attacker - named as Benjamin Herman - shouted "Allahu Akbar" as he carried out the massacre.
Interior minister Jan Jambon confirmed Herman "also committed a murder the night before" the cop killings. His victim was a former inmate who did jail time with him.
According to RTL, the former Lantin prison detainee was found dead on Tuesday morning after being killed with a blunt object.
Herman had a knife when he then stole an officer's firearm yesterday and used the gun against his victims before taking a woman hostage at a school in Liege. The hostage was released without harm.
