Thieves nick shark from aquarium by disguising it as a baby

A trio of thieves stole a live shark from a Texas aquarium by disguising it as a baby and smuggling it out inside an infant carriage, according to astounding new reports.



The Saturday afternoon heist was so bizarre, local police at first thought the whole thing sounded extremely fishy.



“When we first got the call, we thought it was kind of a hoax being that it was Shark Week last week,” Leon Valley police Chief Joseph Salvaggio told KSAT TV.



“But it turns out someone actually went inside the aquarium there in Leon Valley and stole a horn shark.”



The bandits — two men and a woman — swiped the 1.5-foot predator from an open tank at the San Antonio Aquarium around 3 p.m., with one guy grabbing its tail while the other two wrapped it in a wet blanket, according to the local ABC affiliate.



They then placed the shark-baby in a stroller and wheeled the dripping bundle out of the aquatic museum undetected before hopping in a maroon truck, the cops said.



The aquarium’s staff didn’t notice their giant fish was gone for another 45 minutes.



Police later found the truck and took a person of interest into custody — but the bottom-dwelling booty remains at large for now.



Horn sharks can survive outside of water for two to three hours, a wildlife expert told KENS 5 News — so it may still be alive.



“We’ll be surprised if the shark survives. We sure hope it does, but being outside of that environment that it’s made to be in — the warm water, the salt water — there’s a good chance it won’t make it,” Salvaggio told KSAT.
