Las Vegas, Nevada — At approximately 1:10 p.m. LVMPD patrol officers were dispatched to a business located at 1150 S. Rainbow Boulevard after LVMPD Dispatch received reports of a robbery in progress. The suspect, later identified as 27-year-old Mario Trejo, was described as wearing all black clothing, a motorcycle helmet, and armed with a handgun. Arriving units made contact with a witness who confirmed the robbery was still in progress.
Within a minute of officers’ arrival, Trejo exited the business with a hostage. He had one arm around the hostage’s neck and his gun held at her head. Trejo forced the hostage to walk towards his vehicle which was parked nearby as officers issued multiple commands. As Trejo and the hostage got closer to his vehicle, he pointed his firearm towards the officers.
The hostage reached out, grabbed Trejo’s gun and pulled it down towards the ground, causing it to discharge. The hostage pulled the gun out of Trejo’s hand and threw it on the ground and ran back into the business. Trejo then reached for a rifle he had slung on his body at which time three officers discharged their weapons, striking Trejo once in the chest. Trejo fell to the ground still in possession of the rifle. Officers issued verbal commands to lay flat on the ground and not touch the rifle. Trejo refused commands and a K9 was deployed and he was taken into custody without any further incident.
Medical was summoned and transported Trejo to UMC where he is currently in stable condition.
Trejo was booked in absentia for the following charges: Robbery with a deadly weapon, Burglary while in possession of a gun, Assault with a deadly weapon on a protected person ( 3 counts), Kidnapping with a deadly weapon (1st degree)
