A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck 9 miles from Anchorage, Alaska, a city with a population of 294,356.
According to a source, the damage is as follows: "Four airports were affected by the earthquake: the Ted Stevens International Airport, Adak Airport, Merrill Field Airport and Fort Richardson Airport.
The Anchorage Police Department reported major infrastructure damage across the city. One police station's roof collapsed. Liquefaction was reported. Several traffic lights were knocked down, bringing traffic to a halt. Many roads were also damaged too.
The Glenn Highway was damaged to the point where officials stated it would probably take a long time to repair it.
Sarah Palin said that while she and her family were intact, her house was not.
The Alaska Railroad had to suspend all operations due to severe damage at their operations center, and unknown condition of tracks.
The operators of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline shut the system down as a precaution, however they reported that there is no known damage to the pipeline."
Tsunami warnings were issued, but were later lifted.
The original earthquake was followed by a large aftershock, with a magnitude of 5.7, with the epicenter centered 2.5 miles from Anchorage.
