Two men boarded a charter school bus and beat the driver during an afternoon route dropping off children in Detroit on Friday, Jan. 25.
Video of the altercation captured by the bus surveillance camera has drawn attention on social media, and a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the driver brought in more than $12,000 in 16 hours.
Rebhi Mohammed was driving a bus route for Multicultural Academy, a charter school in Pittsfield Township, on Friday afternoon when his bus grazed the side of a vehicle and knocked off a mirror, according to the GoFundMe campaign page.
Supporters of Mohammed say two men from that vehicle boarded the bus the next time it stopped. The video shows two men repeatedly hitting Mohammed. About 10 children are visible on the bus, and they move to the back when the attack begins.
Detroit police responded to the incident, said Terry Farha, director of Universal Management Company, which provides personnel management and other services for Multicultural Academy. Police contacted students’ parents and the bus driver was taken to the hospital, he said.
Police could not immediately confirm the details of the incident.
