Former Paterson officer Ruben McAusland was sentenced Wednesday to more than five years in prison for drug dealing and assaulting a hospital patient. McAusland was on duty and in uniform during the March 18, 2018, incident. The 27-year-old ex-Paterson officer had pleaded guilty last June to possessing drugs with the intent to distribute and depriving the patient of his civil rights.
The hospital patient, identified as Andrew Casciano, has filed a $4 million lawsuit against the city. Police officer Roger Then recorded video of the assault with his cellphone. Then has pleaded guilty in the hospital assault.
