Red Bluff police have released bodycam footage of a fatal shooting of a man that occurred in the early morning of 4/14/2019.
The man was identified as Henry Lane, 42 of Red Bluff, California. A Red Bluff police officer shot and killed Lane after he allegedly threatened to hit him and other officers with a large stick.
Lane was shot early on Antelope Boulevard just east of Rio Street, according to a news release from the Red Bluff Police Department.
A statement from Red Bluff police Chief Kyle Sanders said officers contacted Lane shortly after midnight Sunday. Officers demanded Lane drop the large stick he was carrying, but he refused and walked away from officers, Sanders said.
Officers used "less-than-lethal tools," including a stun gun and a bean bag round fired from a gun, to get Lane man to comply, Sanders said.
"These attempts proved ineffective and the male came toward officers with the large stick raised in preparation to strike at the officers. One officer then fired one round from his service pistol, striking the male in his upper body," Sanders said.
After the shooting, officers began life-saving measures on Lane until paramedics arrived and took him to St. Elizabeth Community Hospital in Red Bluff, where he was declared dead. Red Bluff Cpl. Stephen Harper fired the shot that killed the suspect, Sanders said.
Harper is a 15-year police veteran who has been with the Red Bluff Police Department for 3½ years, Sanders said. Harper was placed on administrative leave.
None of the officers involved in the incident were injured, the chief said.
Red Bluff police will conduct an internal investigation into the shooting, and the Tehama County District Attorney's Office will also conduct an independent investigation, Sanders said.
