Niles, OH - On January 2, 2019, Matthew Burroughs was observed inside the Niles Municipal Court. Burroughs was recognized as having a warrant for his arrest. A probation officer attempted to stop Burroughs inside the court but Burroughs fled.
The probation officer followed Burroughs and ordered him to stop. Burroughs ignored the probation officer’s commands and entered his vehicle, a white Ford Fusion.
As Burroughs attempted to enter his vehicle, the probation officer attempted to grab Burroughs but was unsuccessful. Burroughs was able to enter his vehicle and placed his vehicle into reverse. Burroughs struck the probation officer with his open car door. Burroughs then fled the area.
It was relayed to Niles officers what had occurred at the Niles Municipal Court, and the vehicle involved was a white Ford Fusion bearing Ohio registration HMM 3488. It was also relayed to officers that the vehicle registration returned to Matthew Burroughs with an address of 53 Royal Mall Drive, Niles, Ohio.
Two Niles police officers went to the Royal Mall apartments in an attempt to locate the Ford Fusion and to make contact with Burroughs. When officers arrived at the Royal Mall apartments, one officer exited his cruiser and proceeded to apartment 53.
Around that time, Burroughs entered the apartment complex and refused to stop for officers. It was reported that Burroughs steered his vehicle in the path of the officer who was on foot. Two Niles police officers discharged their duty weapons, striking Burroughs.
